Have owned this camera for about 6 months. I am retired and my wife said GET A HOBBY. Well I always liked photography but never considered it for a hobby. With this purchase I now get out of my wifes hair lol. The kit lenses are nice but I have now purchased Nikkor 35mm wide angle , 60mm macro lens and a Sigma 150mm-500mm lens. Everytime I use this camera either for portraits, landscape or wildlife it is a new adventure.
The Nikon D5100 is everything I ever wanted in a dSLR camera and more. It's a bit heavy, though, using the Nikkor 18-200mm lens attached, but this is a minor grievance considering the high-quality results and low light performance it delivers. A good, powerful flash, though, is still a great addition of equipment for anyone's arsenal of photo supplies. The D5100 is a fun camera to use and learn with for a beginner to photography, or an experienced camera enthusiast. Still, though, proper lighting is crucial to a good photograph, and outside ambient light in a shady area with a low ISO setting, like ISO 200 for example, makes for great portraits, especially when using the "portrait" setting in the "programmed modes" set on the command dial. Overall, this camera excels many other cameras in it's price range...like low-light images, fast auto focus, portraits with beautiful skin tones and color accuracy. It could take even the experienced photo-bug a while to discover and master the various capabilities of this great addition to the Nikon line-up of great quality cameras, and I hope to have my D5100 for many years to come. Furthermore, the monitor on the back-side of the camera is very good at scrolling around a picture and shows details well and is hinged away from the camera body allowing easier navigating when not using the eyepiece to compose a picture. I am totally delighted to own this highly capable camera from any view, and I highly recommend the D5100 by Nikon to any photography enthusiast or beginner to this wonderful hobby and art form!!
It Is unfortunate the one-star users had bad experiences with this camera. I am a 30-year professional photographer. I've used nikons, Canons and Leica cameras over the years. I bought the D5100 as a backup and I'm amazed at the feature set and quality for the price. I am a woman who has a bit of arthritis setting in my hands and the light weight of this little gem is a welcome change. I purchased this camera just a couple of weeks ago but I've shot over 3500 wedding and event photos with it as a test and it hasn't failed me and it produced photos as good or better than some I've taken with my more expensive Nikons.
This is a fantastic camera for many types of professional photography and for the serious amateur looking to upgrade to a better camera. I have been a photographer for 30+ years and have recommended this camera to many friends as a GREAT buy in photography for what it does and for it's comparative ease of use. You won't be sorry ... ya can't go wrong with this purchase.
